There are a lot of guys that are real proud of their ability to do their own work around the house, they call themselves DIY’ers, or Do It Yourself’ers. They watch all kinds of TV shows on remodeling homes, fixing plumbing, and doing landscaping projects. However, pouring concrete can be one of those big projects that tend to scare the average guy because of the permanent reminder of any mistakes you make. Once they back that big truck up and start pouring, you’d better be ready.

There is however, another way to cover your patio and not only are the results nicer than cement, but it’s easy enough that anyone can do it, but not without the help from a trusted paver patio company. That’s right, we’re talking about paver stones. Let’s take a look at how to get started laying out your own beautiful patio using nothing but pavers and some good old hard work to create that beautiful hardscape you always wanted.

Paver Stones Solve Some Of The Biggest Problems Concrete Has

One of the worst problems with concrete is that, after a little while, it tends to crack. Then, the longer it remains, the bigger, longer, and uglier the cracks become until you have to replace the entire slab. This happens for several reasons, many times the earth underneath the area is unstable, there are giant tree roots lifting from below, or there weren’t enough  expansion seems in the original installation. Some of these problems are preventable, but fixing a broken slab usually requires a huge amount of work digging up the old slab and pouring a new one. This will cost double, or more, of the price of the original concrete job because of the extra work.

On the other hand, pavers take perfect care of all of these problems. Since there is technically a seam between each paver they are infinitely flexible, to a point. Obviously, you can’t have a tree root lift your pavers into the air, but a half inch won’t break anything. Also, if you need to dig up a couple of pavers and re-level the ground beneath them, you can do so in an afternoon and be good for several more years even in a bad location. Tree roots will always be a problem and you can’t cut them all down or you won’t have any shade. But, if you cover your patio with pavers, the movement won’t create unsightly cracks and everything can be fairly easily repaired for very little money.

Almost Anyone With Enough Patience Can Lay Pavers

If you take the time to read the instructions, and maybe watch a few informational videos online, you’ll be able to lay pavers yourself, unless you’re like me and don’t wanna deal with all the work involved. Personally, after finding out how much labor it actually takes, I hired my friend Paul, the owner of Hardscapes Indianapolis. The first key is to roughly sketch out the area and then use a garden hose to mark it. After that, you’ll need to excavate the entire space deep enough so that you can fill in a gravel layer as a solid base under your pavers. You should always have a slight slope to the pavers that you install so that the water will continuously run off to the sides. You’ll not want any puddles or pools of standing water after each rain.

Next you’ll want to put in some edging material that’s designed to keep the pavers together and prevent their separation. There are many materials that work, like pressure treated timbers, plastic edging, metal and even precast concrete made for just this purpose. Then spread some sand over the entire area so that each paver has something to be embedded into.

Now, you can lay your pavers, it’s a slow job, but there is no hurry like there is when you pour concrete. You can take your time, take breaks and even come back the next day to finish if you like. Still, you should be able to painstakingly lay a huge patio in a day, working at a steady pace. Once all the pavers have been laid, then you spread a light layer of fine sand that fills in the cracks between pavers, use a broom to make it easier.

That’s all there is to it, it’s not hard to do, and you can take all the time you need to do it right. If you make mistakes or the ground moves, you can always take a few hours and fix the problem on any nice afternoon. Now you can see why pavers are so popular since they’re easy to lay, look fantastic, plus they are repairable quickly and easily for a lifetime.

Paths and outdoor flooring made from stamped concrete are pretty durable. After all, concrete truly is one of the hardest materials out there. That being said, there are not many things in the world that are truly impervious to all damage, and concrete is certainly not one of them.

Whether it is the effect of general wear and tear of everyday use or perhaps damage from sunlight and weather, over time you may notice small cracks begin to appear in your stamped concrete.

You may also see some fading where color has been used – although giving your stamped concrete a good scrubbing can often offset this!

“You may also notice cracks appearing very shortly after the installation of your stamped concrete” – says Derrick a concrete contractor based in Indianapolis, Indiana. He also mentioned that these are known as shrinkage cracks, and they can appear if imprinting tools like the rigid mats have been used when the concrete is too hard.

Check out some of Derrick’s decorative work below:

Because of the nature of concrete stamping, it is sometimes unavoidable to end up with the small cracks. The window of opportunity for stamping and crafting the concrete can often be very small – so small in fact that even the professionals can make mistakes.

There are also a variety of variables at play that affect how quickly the concrete dries – and thus, how long your contractor will have to work with the concrete. The weather on the day, particularly if it is sunny, the mixture in the concrete itself and even the color of the concrete can affect the drying time (as dark colors attract and trap heat, so a concrete surface treated with dark colors will dry that bit faster).

Now you have a good idea how and why these smalls cracks can form, the next question will, I imagine, be can they be repaired?

Happily, yes they can be. One of the best ways is to utilize what is referred to as a colored cement paste.  Some contractors will also call this method a color patch, for the obvious reason that they are like small patches of color that can be applied onto a crack to repair it. If you’ve ever fixed the tire of a bicycle using a small rubber patch then you will have a good idea what we are referring to here as it’s broadly the same principle.

If you are trying to decide between the type of patio to have installed, be sure to check out Derrick’s recent article on wood vs. concrete patios. It really shows the argument from both sides.

You see, many color manufactures will sell color patches in kits, ready to apply to cracks. The good thing with these is that, as they are supplied by the same company who supply the bulk of the color in your stamped concrete path the color patch will be of exactly the same color and chemical composition. This will allow it to blend seamlessly with your path.

All you do is blend the colored powder of the color patch into a mixture of concrete bonding polymer and water. The ratio for the mix of these two ingredients is 50:50 by the way. You will be left with a smooth paste of the same color as your path. Using a spatula or even your own finger (put on a pair of rubber or latex gloves first!) simply smear the color patch over the cracks.

Voila! One repaired stamped concrete pathway!
